MLB — How signing Andrew McCutchen sets up Philadelphia Phillies for Harper and Machado

LAS VEGAS — We have the first big move of the winter meetings as the Philadelphia Phillies have agreed to terms with Andrew McCutchen on a three-year deal for a reported $50 million that also includes a team option. The former NL MVP will improve the Phillies’ defense in left field and should provide more consistency at the plate than the departed Carlos Santana did in 2018. So far, new GM Brodie Van Wagenen has shown a penchant for playing high-stakes poker. No surprise he’s all-in on the best available…

Patriots, 49ers have brain lock in Week 14

The San Francisco 49ers aren’t accustomed to lining up in victory formation. So, it should come as little surprise that third string quarterback Nick Mullens took a knee too quickly on fourth down, giving the ball back to the Broncos with 5 seconds left. Trailing 20-14, Denver had one last, long shot at a 61-yard touchdown on a hook-and-ladder prayer, the likes of which hadn’t been seen in the NFL since … well, about three hours earlier when the Dolphins stunned the Patriots 34-33 with the longest play from scrimmage…

Golden State G League team in Santa Cruz is key developer

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (AP) — As the Santa Cruz Warriors huddled after practice, Darius Morris provided a quick recap of his adventure to the Arizona desert a day earlier to interview with the Suns. Phoenix needed a point guard given Devin Booker’s hamstring injury, and Morris was at least in the mix. Santa Cruz coach Aaron Miles, who so wishes he were still playing professionally, had a little fun leading the offense in Morris’ absence. Just one example of life in the topsy-turvy, changing-by-the-day G League, when Golden State or…

Ailing Predators play Senators to start 3-game homestand

Make no mistake about it, the Nashville Predators are a shorthanded team. They are currently operating without All-Star defenseman P.K. Subban, as well as top six forwards Filip Forsberg, Viktor Arvidsson and Kyle Turris. But they also know they’re capable of playing better hockey than they did in 5-3 and 5-2 road losses on a road trip to Vancouver and Calgary, respectively. Those outcomes dropped them out of the top spot in the Western Conference and left them in a tie for first place in the Central Division with Colorado.…

No. 1 Kansas gets big test against No. 17 Villanova

Kansas started the season No. 1, dropped to No. 2 despite not losing and moved back to the top spot after playing its worst game of the season. Now, the Jayhawks get a massive test. On Saturday, newly-No. 1 Kansas hosts No. 17 Villanova at Allen Fieldhouse in a rematch of the 2018 national semifinals. The Wildcats stomped Kansas on the way to the national title, and the Jayhawks are coming off a shaky performance against New Mexico State. “We’ve played a really hard schedule. It’s just going to get…

Nevada regulators postpone Nurmagomedov, McGregor hearings

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Nevada fight regulators have postponed hearings on the suspensions of Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov for a brawl after UFC 229 in Las Vegas. State Athletic Commission Chairman Anthony Marnell III cited continuing negotiations with Nurmagomedov’s attorneys toward a settlement that could avoid a public hearing Jan. 29. Commission executive Bob Bennett says McGregor’s attorneys also received a continuance. Marnell has said fines and punishment up to a lifetime ban could be considered for the Irishman and the Russian from Dagestan. He says the suspensions will…

Posey could be limited early, should return to 100 percent

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Buster Posey’s recovery from right hip surgery might limit how much the San Francisco All-Star catches during spring training and at the start of the season. Posey had surgery in late August to repair a torn labrum in the hip and remove an impingement. “Certainly with a guy like Buster coming off the major surgery it might impact his spring training workload and maybe even his early season workload, but for now all the indications are positive that he’ll be 100 percent,” new Giants president of…
